ALL THREE DAYS IN ONE SET OF IMAGES FROM PRIDE 2011
Gay Pride Benidorm in Spain
The first ever Benidorm Pride ran from 21st to 23rd October
2011 with amazing headliners and satellite events around the old
town a 72 hour party. Benidorm Gay Pride 2012 is expected to
be October 19 to 21
The entire event was officially being run by the recently
formed Gay Business Association and is in collaboration with the
town hall who provided the main stage, sound, lighting and
Policing for the event. Pride Benidorm was a non profit event.
Apart from the main stage there were two other stages. Sadly
the event had to be moved last minute from the beach as
permission was not granted by the Director of Beaches, as
Alcohol is not allowed on Beaches plus this would have opened
the floodgates for all associations to demand use of the beach.
Where as many Pride events are ticketed a voluntary
contribution policy was adopted, where those attending were
asked to contribute what they could before entering participating
venues by simply placing money in a bucket held by one of many
volunteers. ALL proceeds went to three local charites in Spain
by means of a suggested voluntary €2 charge to access the main
Stage or when visiting any of the participating bars where a
voluntary donation would be asked for at the door. In addition
pledge wristbands were on sale for €10 which means the wearer
has paid up front for entry into bars and stage areas. (excluded
Ticketed events). The three charities to benefit were ALGBT,
(Association of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals), the
local Benidorm HIV/AIDS charity Amigos and ‘26th December’, a
charity building the first accommodation services to the elderly
gay community in Madrid. €1 from alcohol sold at the park bars
and 50 cents from soft drinks was also to benefit the charities
during the three day Benidorm Gay Pride event. Benidorm Gay
Pride 2012 is expected to be announced soon once all the issues
surrounding the first event have been ironed out.
For a first Pride event in Benidorm it was generally
regarded as a success, although numbers attending were way
below those expected. On the first day no more than 400 were in
the main stage area which fell to under 200 on day 2 and less on
day three. The biggest complaints came from those who were
unable to find out who was appearing on the main stage and
when plus some events were moved from the main stage to
satellite stages such as the Mr Gay Benidorm contest. This
certainly annoyed those who had paid for a wristband only to find
out it was really not needed as few bars were collecting on the
doors and on the third day entry was free to anyone.
No doubt events will be discussed and many will moan on
facebook and other open forums, because they can! BUT at the
end of the day it happended and that alone is cause to
celebrate. Their are those who wanted it to fail for political
reasons and some who simply do not want it, but Gay Pride
Benidorm is likely to stay and build into a major event in years to
come. The organisers need to ensure that the aim of making
money for charities is not lost as the Charities were not really
mentioned and the public had little awareness of where money
was going. Pride is a community event and as such care needs
to be taken not to allow business interests to take over! More
financial transparency, open and public meetings and timely
communication on the Internet will help to make the event better
attended in future. 2012 Benidorm Gay Pride TBC soon follow us

NO - 2012 BENIDORM GAY PRIDE
MESSAGE FROM THE B.G.B.A (Please share this)
Folowing a meeting earlier today of the Committee of The Benidorm Gay Business Association it falls to me to
make public the "Official" and only decision regarding Benidorm Pride 2012.
After many hours of discussion and deliberation we as a Committee have decided not to pursue discussions with
Benidorm City Council to host a "Pride Festival" this year, because of many internal factors and now obvious
limited time constraints, making it difficult, in our view, to ensure we could organise a successful event in again a
very short time.
We do not want to be under pressure to deliver an event that is rushed and badly planned. With this in mind we
are postponing our Pride event for a few months to allow us to plan and co-ordinate a second, better organised,
advertised and promoted event in the future.
This decision in no way reflects any alleged problems or delays from the Council, who have to date been wholly
supportive of the event and we feel sure will be in the future. We, as a Committee look forward to welcoming the
"World" to Benidorm and a 2nd Benidorm Pride in the foreseeable future!!
